WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Use of very fine needles through the patient's skin at strategic points. As a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. But more recently, it is used for general well-being, including stress management.

At the Sports Medicine Clinic, our practitioners use electroacupuncture, which is a painless technique that precisely stimulates anatomical structures using thin, sterile acupuncture needles with an electric current.

Who can provide acupuncture treatments?

Can I come to the clinic just for an acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture is offered as part of your treatment if deemed necessary by your healthcare provider during your initial evaluation or as part of your ongoing treatment.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of sessions you need is determined by your healthcare provider and based on your overall goals and treatment results.

Is there anyone who does not recommend acupuncture?

Acupuncture is not recommended for:

  • Those who have a phobia of needles
  • Individuals with active inflammatory disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Those who have had an organ transplant
  • People who have metastatic disease
  • Patients taking multiple medications

The treatment may cause local bruising or bleeding, especially in patients taking NSAIDs, aspirin or anticoagulants. It is also important to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

Is the active release technique covered by OHIP or my insurance?

Most insurance plans will provide coverage. Please check your individual plans for more details. Acupuncture is not covered by OHIP plans. The Sports Medicine Clinic will provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
